Although many times thought of as a species of fish that is best fished for while utilizing a technique known as "fly fishing", the rainbow trout can also be fished for and caught while using a variety of traditional spin fishing techniques as well, some of which involve various types of fishing lures. As an ultralight spin fisherman myself, who has been fishing for and catching these beautiful fish for more than two decades, I have found that some fishing lures are more effective than others, which is where the idea for this article was born.
In this article I will outline the top 3 rainbow trout fishing lures so that you can make sure that you have one or all of them available to you the next time that you head out in search of rainbows. These lures will be listed in no particular order, as I have found them all to be effective in different trout fishing conditions and/or scenarios.
The first of the 3 rainbow trout lures that has to be outlined is The Rapala Stick Bait. Either the 2 or 3 inch versions of these balsa wood constructed stick baits consistently catch rainbow trout in all types of water. These small floating minnow plugs mimic a small bait fish in an extremely realistic manner which hungry rainbows find difficult to resist.
The next lure that needs to be listed is are Panther Martin Spinners. Spinners have long been known to be effective fishing lures for catching rainbow trout and Panther Martin spinners seem to take this phenomenon to the next level. Known as "the greatest fish catcher of all time", there is little doubt that when it comes to rainbow trout fishing lures, Panther Martin spinners have to be among the top 3 choices on any serious trout fisherman's list.
Finally we come to a lure that many trout fishermen would never even consider as a viable choice when it comes to fishing for trout, but they certainly should be. I'm referring to a soft plastic hybrid bait known as the Skippyfish. Skippyfish in either the 2 or four inch size are an extremely effective lure to use for hungry rainbow trout. These lures are a sort of "swim bait hybrid" that have an incredibly lifelike action underwater that mimics a wounded bait fish in an amazingly realistic manner, which is something that "rainbows" find difficult to resist.
The bottom line is that if you are a spin fisherman who fishes for rainbow trout all of these trout fishing lures should be a part of your arsenal and if any of them aren't they should be added sooner rather than later.
