Your choosing the right ice fishing rod is very important because when you are fishing on ice the last thing you want to be doing is worrying about your fishing tackle. You need to take your time and choose the right rod for you because as you'll soon find out there are hundreds of ice fishing rods to choose from.

The thing about these types of rod is they are designed very differently to normal fishing rods. The biggest difference obviously is that you don't have to cast when fishing on ice - you just drop the line down. So your ice rod should be strong enough to battle a large fish, and when I say battle I mean battle and win! Ice rods are designed for the drag on the line to be vertical as opposed to a normal fishing rod, this design will normally mean the end of the rod is very strong so it won't break under duress.

The most popular size ice fishing rod is the 28" rod. It has an average action and you can liken it to a jigging rod, the perfect rod for walleye, trout and whitefish. A lighter rod will be fine for perch and the like however a heavier rod will be required when targeting lake trout or pike.

Your ice fishing rod does need to have some flexibility otherwise you'll never feel the fishing biting or even when you've hooked one. As most fish species metabolism slows right down in winter they feed less - that means you won't get as many nibbles. So it is very important that your rod be flexible enough to feel every time a fish esquires of your bait. There has to be some give and take because a rod that is too flexible will not be able to haul your fish up vertically towards the top of the lake.

Ice rods made of graphite will give a firmer and stronger resilience to reel in your catch with little chance of the rod breaking. But you should remember in very cold temperatures graphite has a tendency to become brittle and can break at the most inappropriate time. My advice is to get yourself an ice fishing rod made of fiberglass. They are not as sensitive as the graphite rods, a little less flexible but will last a long time and you won't notice a massive difference between them.
