As I headed out for a little fall trout fishing the other day, I couldn't help but notice how much cooler it was becoming, as a matter of fact the temperatures at night have been in the thirties here in Northwest Montana, so you could easily say it's been cold at night. However, during the day the temperatures warm have generally been warming up to much more tolerable levels, which makes fishing for trout much more comfortable. In any case, when the cooler temperatures begin to set in during the fall, it generally means that the trout that I fish for (mainly rainbow trout) usually become much more active.
On this day, this rule most definitely help true as I had a very successful day of fishing. 5 rainbows total, 3 under 12 inches and 2 that were over 15. And this in only about an hour and a half of fishing. Not a bad day by anyone's calculation. Yep, there is no doubt that the fall is my favorite time of the year to fish for rainbow trout.
The bottom line to this post is that rainbows love the cooler temperatures that the fall of the year brings, so if you have the chance, make sure that you get out there and wet a line. Because, don't forget, due to where we live, soon many of us will be "holed up" like hostages during a terrorist attack, due to the months of December, January, and February.
