Trout Fishing Rods – What is the Best Fishing Rod For Trout?

As a person who has been fishing for trout for more than two decades, I can honestly say that other than a pair of waders that doesn’t leak, the fishing rod that you use when trout fishing is as important a piece of equipment as there is. Many trout fishermen, especially "newbies", tend to think that the fishing rod that is used when fishing for trout doesn’t matter that much, but nothing could be further from the truth. Trout fishing rods do matter and in this post I will outline a few of the best fishing rods for trout.

The biggest key to remember with any trout fishing rod is that the rod is ultralight power. You can see the designation as to the "power" of the rod in the description of the rod itself. You will a 'ul' in the description of the rod, which designates the 'power'. In almost all trout fishing scenarios an ultra light power rod should be used.

Rather than actually listing "the best" of the trout fishing rods, I am going to list the 3 best that I personally have used, and you can use this information to make a more informed decision the next time that you are in the market for a new trout fishng rod.
  1. Fenwick HMG Spinning Rod - The Fenwick HMG rod in either the four foot nine or five foot six inch length is a great fishing rod for trout. These graphite rods provide excellent feel, and are particularly good when used while fishing most any trout fishing lure or when fishing with any type of "fly fishing bubble". These rods are moderately priced at just about $100 and come with a limited lifetime warranty.
  2. St Croix Triumph Spinning Rod - St Croix Premier Series spinning rods make great trout fishing rods no matter which type of trout bait that you choose to employ. You can get either a five, five foot six, or six foot version of the Triumph series, all of which make excellent rods for trout fishing. These are the rods that I am currently using and I couldn't be happier. They come with a five year warranty.
  3. Cabela's Pro Guide PTC Spinning Rod - This is the most economical of the trout fishing rods being outlined at just under $50, but don't let the moderate price tag fool you. The 100% graphite blanks deliver awesome strength and sensitivity and fast-action tips provide quick, precise casts and rapid hook-sets that are needed when trout fishing.
The bottom line is that if you are an avid trout fisherman, the best fishing rod to use for trout can more than likely be found among the aforementioned choices.
